A few things to think about before starting your game based learning project

1. Pick your platform
Before you start your project you need to think about the software and/or game engine that you are going to use. It could be anything from Flash to Unity but you need to select careful and think about whether it can be used at your target environment.

2. You are designing for the users not you!
You may want to build a triple A first game experience like Tour of Duty or Angry Birds but your users come first. Remember that you are designing for them and not for you!

3. What is the learning experience?
What do you want to involve in your game? What do you want your learner to experience? Are there specific learner objectives that you want to link with game experiences?

4. Play some games
Play some games! Mini-games, hand held games, sports, action, adventure - basically play as many as you can (within reason!). If you are new to game design and development it will help you understand game scoring, mechanics and what is interesting you when you play games.

5. Don't pick game based learning for the sake of it
Like any software project you need to make sure that the development platform and the solution is what you need. Don't get stuck into thinking that you must develop a game based learning project if its not what you need.
